POTICHE

Funny and gentle Francois Ozon set in the 1970's. An opportunity to watch Depardieu and Deneuve at play.

OCTOBER

NEVER LET ME GO

A close adaptation by Alex Garland of Kazuo Ishiguro's heartbreaking novel. Like the book, the film leaves you with plenty of questions about the world it depicts but it does so in style. Beautifully shot with strong performances and sailing very close to home.

THE TOWN

Following his excellent Gone Baby Gone, Ben Affleck directs this slick heist movie set in his Boston home town. Tense.

THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES (El secreto de sus ojos)

A beautiful slow-paced thriller from Argentina. Strong performances from Soledad Villamil and Ricardo Darin. A treat.

SEPTEMBER

THE OTHER GUYS

Extremely silly but very funny buddy cop movie with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.

JUNE

THE KILLER INSIDE ME

If you've read Jim Thompson's book on which this film is based, you will have some idea of the difficulties involved in making and watching it. First person narrative of a charming killer. Truly disturbing. Not sure if that's a good thing.

MAY

THE JONESES

Not sure why this hasn't had more buzz. It's really good and so great to see Demi in such fine form. Don't watch the trailer though, too many spoilers.

APRIL

KICK-ASS

100% fabulous (leave your immortal soul with the popcorn vendor and collect on the way out).

WHIP IT

Enjoyable roller-derby romp with a great soundtrack and at least one convert to ripped fishnets and retro skates.

I AM LOVE

Glacially slow Italian love story with Tilda Swinton on gorgeous form as an uptight Milanese matriarch, seduced by her son's friend. Delicious.

MARCH

THE GIRL WITH DRAGON TATTOO

Excellent Swedish version of Steig Larsson's book with Noomi Rapace managing the seemingly impossible task of realising the fantasy that is Lisbeth Salander.

THE GHOST WRITER

An enjoyable thriller from the novel by Robert Harris with a hint of 70's detective television from Mr Polanski.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

The combined books of 'Looking Glass and Wonderland' make perfect material for a Burton/Depp/Bonham-Carter triumph.

GREEN ZONE

Another rogue US soldier saves the world. Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon rack up the tension.

JANUARY

A PROPHET

Brutal take on loyalty and survival in a French prison divided by religious and cultural warriors.

SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL

Fantastic incarnation of the great Ian Dury by Andy Serkis.

AVATAR

Pocahontas in space. Gorgeous and silly.

PRECIOUS

Rewarding but hard-to-watch tale of a young girl's abuse growing up in 1980s Harlem. Based on the novel Push by Saphire and featuring the impressive debut of Gabourey Sidibe.

DECEMBER

UP IN THE AIR

A film about living as a George Clooney-type character starring George Clooney. Perfect.

OCTOBER

ZOMBIELAND

Does what it says on the tin.

It might break your heart a little more than you wanted. Stuff I'm Going To Do.

SURROGATES

Bruce Willis in good-looking sci-fi? What's not to like?

SEPTEMBER

JULIE AND JULIA

Scrumptious fare from Nora Ephron with Meryl Streep in marvelous form as Julia Child, the giantess who bestrode 1960's French/American cuisine.

DISTRICT 9

Documentary style feature about the pesky resident alien problem with a standout performance from Sharlto Copely.

FUNNY PEOPLE

Surprisingly messy dramedy from Judd Apatow that rises above its penile humour with the considerable charm of Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen.
